This spectacular view can be seen from the 1/2 mile marker along the Waihe'e Ridge Trail on Maui. Expansive Waihe'e Valley cuts into the West Maui Mountains, while the volcano of East Maui rises above the clouds in the greater distance. This painting is the result of an elaborate process, beginning with a relatively tiny scale drawing which I completed on location to ensure that all of the elements of the scene were rendered in proper proportion to one another. Then I used a grid to reproduce the drawing on a much larger canvas, copying the image square by square. The painting was completed with the use of digital photos for reference, due to the impossibility of working on such a large project in such a remote location. More than 30 photos, including close-up shots of critical areas, provided the visual information that I required to finish the piece. This painting was exhibited in the annual Art Maui show for 2000, and was purchased by the Hawai'i State Foundation on Culture and the Arts.
