Yes, this is Maui. The Hawaiian Islands actually have a great deal of desert terrain, adding to the enormous diversity of Hawaii's landscape. Interesting structures of volcanic cinder and ash, like these along the north shore of West Maui, can be found in a variety of places, where erosion has revealed the history of the island's geological development.
