Artist's Statement…
One teacher admonished that if I didn't speed up; I’d never
make it as a painter. nother, several years later, said to always use a too large brush. Eventually, these two tips came together in my work
in ways that I am only beginning to understand.

Oneuli Beach, Watercolor

My early years were spent in Southern California, often hiking in the
hills and mountains around my home, sketching and coloring. Then came
the years of learning from teachers: the technical and theory stuff.
After college, there was more drawing and painting, this time for an
aircraft manufacturer. I used mostly acrylics, in a combination
watercolor and oil technique. Also, I got to draw exotic places like
India and Egypt.

In 1972, I left to see some of those exotic places for myself, spending
a year in Europe and North Africa. I brought along a sketchbook, later
buying a set of French watercolors and some paper.
Three years later, I was living on Cape Cod, still drawing, painting
and exhibiting at outdoor shows and in local galleries. By this time,
watercolors were my thing. I was in love!

After nearly 20 years on the New England and Atlantic Coasts, showing
in outdoor festivals, art shows and doing commissioned work, I moved
back to the West Coast, as close to the ocean as I could get.

In December of 1996, my wife Cindy and I were married on a beach in
Maui, and within three months we had moved to Wailuku.
Just as the sun has gives life to this land, the ocean brings life and
unique culture to these islands. For me, there is no more exciting and
mysterious place in which to live and work.

Lynn Shue, owner/director Village Galleries…

Michael Krahn’s clear perceptions of Maui landscapes and florals are
jewel-like in their direct approach to realism. Twice a winner of the
LahainaTown poster contest since his arrival on Maui, Michael has
quickly become one of our most-sought after artists.
