COLLEEN K. HOWE, PSA

Born: American Fork, Utah
Studied drawing and painting at the University of Utah and Brigham Young University. Also private study with Michael Workman and T. Allen Lawson. Workshop study with Sally Strand and Doug Dawson.
I have been a professional artist for 15 years. I also teach national/international landscape painting workshops. In 2011, I will be teaching in southern Utah; Oregon; Jackson, Wyoming; and New Jersey and California.
I grew up on a cattle ranch in southwestern Montana. Our ranch was 1,000 acres of prime meadowland surrounded by beautiful granite mountains. All this beauty definitely inspired me, but I was always interested in drawing and painting. I went to a 2-room old fashioned school house (4 grades, one teacher). So, I would hurry and get my work done, then would have free time to draw in the back of the room until my rotation time came around again. It was wonderful, and I spent my time drawing horses.
Since that time I have lived in New York, California Utah and now, Hawaii. I love the varied tropical landscape and water views for their color, atmosphere and peaceful nature. I travel to different islands for painting plein air, and larger more detailed works are done in my studio. Commissions are welcome.
Projects for 2011 include my workshops across the U.S., filming two instructional videos for pastel painting in May, my work will be featured in a new book published by North Light Books titled, “Art Journey America: Landscapes”, a June article in The Pastel Journal magazine and the prestigious invitational “Maynard Dixon Country” at the end of August (www.thunderbirdfoundation.com).

I feel that viewing art and making art are an integral part of our intelligence and creativity. Art allows us to expand who we are and how we think.

I enjoy teaching others to understand how to paint the landscape outdoors. I travel across the U.S. and have also taught in Provence, France. Helping other artists to advance in their painting journey has been an important highlight in my career. I continue to teach workshops (3-5 days) around the country, and I also teach drawing and painting classes focusing on color harmony and outdoor painting skills.
